Canela, Brazil introduces 50% water‑bill discount for low‑income families

Starting 1 August 2026, families in the Rio Grande do Sul city of Canela who are registered in the national CadÚnico programme will automatically receive a 50 % discount on Corsan water and sewage bills under the new social‑tariff scheme. The programme is expected to benefit roughly 2,200 low‑income households (per‑capita income up to half the minimum wage) and will be applied directly to the account holder’s CPF for each residential property. Non‑titular account holders must request a change of name.

The municipal government, led by Mayor Gilberto Cezar, estimates that the discount will free up household resources for other essentials such as health and education. About 5,800 families in the municipality have updated their CadÚnico registration in the past two years, ensuring automatic eligibility without a new application. Corsan will cross‑check municipal and company data to confirm entitlement.
