In Canela, Brazil, more than 2,200 students in the municipal school system are participating in a full-time education program. The initiative, managed by the Municipal Secretariat of Education, Sport, and Leisure (SMEEL), expands the school day through 16 different types of workshops across nine urban schools.
These extracurricular activities include capoeira, dance, theater, music, English, chess, and visual arts. The program aims to complement regular instruction by fostering creativity, motor coordination, discipline, and social skills. Additionally, the initiative provides approximately 7,800 meals daily to the participating students.
Local authorities stated that the goal is to increase access to full-time education to promote equity and improve the quality of basic education. The administration intends to expand the program next year to include students up to the 9th grade.
