Canelo Alvarez faces upset threat from Christian Mbilli in Riyadh title bout

Canelo Álvarez will defend the WBC super‑middleweight title against unbeaten champion Christian Mbilli on 31 October in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The fight was moved from 12 September after Álvarez cited family matters. Mbilli, elevated from interim to full champion after the retirement of former title‑holder Bud, earned the belt with a 10‑round draw on the undercard of the Canelo‑Crawford event.

Former world champion Paulie Malignaggi predicts that Mbilli’s relentless, high‑pace style could upset Álvarez, who traditionally prefers a slower tempo. Malignaggi said, “One thing Canelo hates is pace,” and warned that if Álvarez wins he may continue to “trap that belt again” without giving other top fighters a chance.
