Canelo Alvarez to challenge Christian Mbilli for WBC title in October

Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez is set to return to the ring on October 31, 2026, to challenge Christian Mbilli for the WBC super middleweight title. Following a loss to Terence Crawford in September 2025 and a subsequent elbow surgery, Álvarez returns not as a defending champion, but as a challenger. The WBC elevated Mbilli from interim to full champion during Álvarez’s absence.

The fight date was finalized by Riyadh Season organizers, shifting from Álvarez’s preferred September window to October to align with the seventh edition of the Saudi Arabian event.

Boxing trainer Stephen ‘Breadman’ Edwards suggests that Mbilli’s aggressive style may suit Álvarez’s counterpunching approach, drawing comparisons to James Toney’s 2003 victory over Vassiliy Jirov. However, analysts note that Álvarez’s declining punch output and stamina compared to his physical peak remain significant factors in the upcoming bout.
