Canelo Alvarez vs. Christian Mbilli fight faces security concerns in Riyadh
The scheduled October 31 boxing match in Riyadh between Canelo Alvarez and Christian Mbilli for the WBC super-middleweight title faces significant uncertainty due to security concerns in Saudi Arabia. The U.S. Mission in Saudi Arabia issued a security alert warning of potential drone or missile attacks, following reports of blasts near the capital.
While the October 31 date remains official, analysts and commentators have speculated about a potential relocation to Las Vegas on November 21 to ensure safety. The bout has also previously faced scrutiny regarding the timing of its VADA testing program, though reports indicate both fighters have since been enrolled.
Former promoter Oscar De La Hoya has criticized the event, labeling Alvarez a ‘sell out’ for fighting in Saudi Arabia on Halloween rather than during traditional Mexican holidays. Despite the criticism, Alvarez has previously expressed a desire to hold his eventual retirement bout in Mexico.
