Canelo Alvarez arrives in Riyadh for WBC title fight

Mexican boxer Saúl ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has arrived in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to prepare for his super middleweight championship bout against Christian Mbilli. The fight, part of the ‘Mexico vs. The World’ event, is scheduled for Saturday, October 31, at The Venue.

Alvarez, seeking to reclaim the WBC super middleweight title following a loss to Terence Crawford in September 2025, was received in Riyadh with traditional Mexican music and folklore dances. He arrived accompanied by Oleksandr Usyk after completing training in Spain. Mbilli, the undefeated Cameroonian-French champion, arrived in the region earlier to prepare for his first title defense.

The event proceeds despite regional security concerns. The U.S. Department of State recently ordered non-essential government personnel to leave Saudi Arabia due to risks from Houthi drone and missile attacks targeting infrastructure, including airports. Despite these tensions, organizers and Alvarez have confirmed the fight remains on schedule. The undercard features several Mexican fighters, including Jaime Munguia and Rafael Espinoza.
