Canelo Álvarez considers Estadio Banorte for retirement fight

Mexican boxer Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez has expressed interest in holding his retirement fight at the Estadio Banorte (formerly Estadio Azteca) in Mexico City. The possibility follows a direct invitation from Emilio Azcárraga Jean, owner of the stadium, who aims to establish the venue as a major hub for sports beyond football.

Azcárraga hopes to emulate the historic 1993 event where Julio César Chávez set a world record for boxing attendance at the stadium. Álvarez noted that fighting in Mexico, particularly in such a historic venue, would be an honor and stated, “I do not rule it out at all. I hope that one day I get the opportunity to fight there.”

While the timing remains uncertain, the plan aligns with Álvarez’s current professional commitments. He is currently under a multi-fight contract with Riyadh Season and Turki Alalshikh that includes several bouts in Saudi Arabia through October 2026. The boxer intends to fulfill these obligations before potentially concluding his career in his home country.
