Canelones traffic inspectors strike after official is assaulted

Traffic inspectors in Canelones, Uruguay, launched a 24-hour strike following an assault on an official in Las Piedras. The incident occurred during a traffic control operation when a 56-year-old motorcyclist, riding without a license plate, struck an inspector in the ear and left parietal area after the official attempted to stop him.

The assailant, who has a criminal record, fled the scene but has since been identified. A formal complaint for injuries has been filed with the 21st Precinct of Las Piedras, and the victim is scheduled to testify before the Prosecutor's Office. The strike suspended various municipal activities, including a health walk in Pando.

The General Directorate of Traffic and Transport issued a strong rejection of the violence, stating that no disagreement with a procedure justifies aggression against public officials. While rumors circulated linking the aggressor to a position in the Montevideo Municipality, Montevideo officials denied these claims, stating the individual holds no authority or employment with the capital's administration.
