Canfaito's Patriarch beech tree stays healthy after assessment

The 550‑year‑old beech known locally as the “Patriarch” in the village of Canfaito, San Severino Marche, Italy, has been examined by the Unione Montana Potenza Esino Musone after a report from the LAC Marche association. Forest doctor Tommaso Spillidi carried out a biomechanical and phytosanitary evaluation using tomography of the trunk and collar. The study showed overall excellent vitality: the main stem wood is sound and the tree’s compartmentalisation capacity remains strong, ensuring mechanical stability against wind.

Age‑related fungal issues were identified. A Ganoderma saprophytic fungus has created a cavity in the collar, while Phytophthora infection has caused necrosis and resin exudation on the trunk. Despite these physiological problems, the remaining healthy wood is sufficient to keep the tree stable. Experts recommend passive protection, avoiding invasive pruning, and continuous monitoring over the next three years to track the tree’s health.

“The monumental beech of Canfaito is more than a tree: it is an identity symbol for our community, a reference point for sustainable tourism and a biodiversity treasure we must protect,” said Denis Cingolani, president of the managing union.
