Cangas celebrates historical 1617 invasion with traditional festival
Cangas do Morrazo is hosting its traditional historical festival, “A Defensa da Vila,” to commemorate the 1617 invasion of the town by Turkish-Berber corsairs. The event features a variety of activities designed to transport attendees to the 17th century, including medieval markets, traditional music with bagpipes and tambourines, historical reenactments, and themed gastronomy.
The festivities include a theatrical representation of the invasion and a focus on local historical figures, such as María Soliña, a symbol of the town's resilience against accusations of witchcraft. Mayor Araceli Gestido opened the celebrations with a formal proclamation, emphasizing the importance of historical memory and the strength of the community, particularly the role of women in defending the town during past hardships.
Scheduled activities include guided historical routes, artisan markets, and children's attractions, all aimed at preserving the cultural heritage and collective memory of the region.
