Cangas council cuts IBI rate to 0.49% amid property revaluation
The municipal council of Cangas approved a reduction of the Impuesto sobre Bienes Inmuebles (IBI) rate from 0.55% to 0.49% to soften the impact of a new cadastral valuation that affects roughly 3,500 properties, including homes and warehouses. The decision resulted from negotiations between the Partido Popular, which initially suggested a 0.50% rate, and Alternativa dos Veciños, which advocated 0.48%; the compromise settled on 0.49%.
All governing parties – BNG, PSOE and EU – voted in favour of the cut, while mayor Araceli Gestido abstained, warning that the lower rate could cost the municipality about €50,000 in revenue and potentially undermine public services. The revaluation applied the Basic Construction Module to parcels previously classified as rural, reclassifying them as urban and raising many households' tax bills. Opposition members said the reduction helps families cope with rising living costs, noting that even a modest saving of five euros per household could be significant in an inflationary context.
