Cangas de Onís seeks more public housing amid local political clash

The municipal council of Cangas de Onís has formally asked the Asturian regional government and the Spanish central government to expand the supply of public housing in the town, citing difficulties for families and young people in finding homes. The council wants the vacant VIPASA property handed over for public use and urges the use of municipal land and buildings to create new protected housing, including a plan to build two blocks on the Vega de Contranquil site.

The local PSOE faction has accused the PP‑led municipal government, headed by mayor José Manuel González Castro, of blocking the construction of new homes as well as the planned health centre, new courts and a day‑care centre for the elderly. PSOE secretary general Vanesa González argues that the lack of municipal land hampers both housing and essential public services, contrasting the town’s situation with the Asturias regional government's active public‑housing policy.

Both parties emphasize the need for more land and resources to address the town’s demographic challenges and to sustain economic and social development.
