Caniçal Port to receive 27 million euros for expansion
The Caniçal Commercial Port in Madeira is undergoing significant infrastructure upgrades to handle increasing cargo volumes. Regional Government President Miguel Albuquerque announced that the port will receive 27 million euros in new investments for embankment expansion and the rehabilitation of the main mole under the Madeira 2030 framework.
As part of recent improvements, the private company OPM has invested 14 million euros in three new Liebherr LHM 420 electric cranes. These cranes are expected to increase cargo movement efficiency from an average of 11.36 movements per hour to 20 movements per hour. This follows a previous 1.8 million euro investment in four Kalmar horizontal movement machines.
Albuquerque noted that cargo volume in Madeira has grown by 35% between 2020 and 2025, with annual container discharges rising from 52,000 to approximately 72,000. The port currently handles 95% of the cargo arriving in the region. Additionally, a 10 million euro project to expand the embankment is nearing completion, which will increase functional operational space and reduce the area occupied by containers in storage.
