Canicatti officials address illegal parking in disability spaces near schools
In Canicatti, parents and local officials are raising concerns regarding the unauthorized occupation of parking spaces reserved for people with disabilities near schools. The issue has resurfaced following the start of the new school year, causing obstacles for students who rely on these spaces to access educational facilities safely.
Municipal Councilor Dario Cipolla emphasized that these spaces are essential services rather than privileges. He noted that even brief stops to pick up children constitute a violation of traffic laws. Under recent reforms, penalties for motorists occupying these spots can reach up to 660 euros and include a four-point deduction from driver's licenses, with penalties doubling for new drivers. Repeat offenders may face fines up to 990 euros.
Local authorities are looking to increase the presence of the Municipal Police near schools and are working with the Department of Public Education to increase awareness among school administrators and families.
