Canillo council pushes for video surveillance use by December 1

The Canillo municipal council is increasing pressure on the government to authorize the use of video surveillance cameras by December 1. This follows a pilot program using cameras on traffic officers' uniforms during a major local festival.

Major, Jordi Alcobé, stated that it is not normal for cameras to remain unused when other parishes have already regulated their use for security and control. He joined the mayors of Andorra la Vella and Sant Julià de Lòria in urging the government to expedite the necessary report from the Video Surveillance Commission.

While most councils are pushing for immediate implementation, the council of Ordino has taken a different stance. Its mayor, Eduard Betriu, emphasized that the administration must not disobey the law, noting that the Data Protection Agency has clarified that municipal regulations do not replace the required prior authorization from the Ministry of the Interior.
