Canine dermatitis risk increases in specific dog breeds
Certain dog breeds, including Shih Tzus, Pugs, Bulldogs, Lhasa Apsos, Golden Retrievers, and Labradors, are genetically predisposed to skin fragility and dermatitis. This natural flaw reduces the skin's protective barrier, making them more susceptible to allergens, dust, pollen, and mites.
A study involving over 3,000 owners and veterinarians across 11 countries, titled ‘Perspectives on Canine Pruritus’ by MSD Animal Health, indicates that allergic dermatitis affects the quality of life for 39% of dogs and 31% of families. The condition accounts for 27% of all global veterinary consultations.
To manage these conditions, experts recommend preventive monitoring, specific hydration baths, consistent flea control, and maintaining a clean environment free of dust-collecting items like heavy curtains or rugs. Diet also plays a role in promoting overall skin health.
