Canine distemper confirmed in foxes in Adaži municipality

The Food and Veterinary Service (PVD) has issued a warning to dog owners in Latvia after canine distemper was laboratory-confirmed in foxes within the Adaži municipality. The virus, which affects the respiratory and digestive systems and can cause coordination issues and seizures, was identified following reports of unusual animal behavior that initially raised concerns about rabies.

In addition to canine distemper, listeriosis was also detected in the foxes. While listeriosis can affect both humans and animals, direct infection from animals to humans is considered rare. PVD officials noted that these are not new diseases in Latvia but serve as a reminder for preventative measures.

Pet owners are advised to ensure dogs are vaccinated, particularly young dogs under one year of age, and to keep pets on leashes during forest walks to prevent contact with wildlife or their excrement. Canine distemper is not dangerous to humans.
