Dog lifespan differences based on body size and growth rates
Small dog breeds often live longer than large breeds due to differences in biological growth rates and physical strain. Large breeds must develop significant body mass in a very short period, which places intense pressure on their bones, joints, heart, and overall physiological systems.
In contrast, small dogs experience a slower, smaller-scale growth process, resulting in less physical load during development and a lower risk of size-related health issues later in life. Additionally, the daily physical burden of carrying more weight—such as during movement or climbing—can impact the long-term health of larger dogs, making weight management and controlled growth essential for their longevity.
