Canine health risks: Nutrient deficiencies and gastric torsion

Veterinary experts are highlighting significant health risks for dogs related to nutrition and acute medical emergencies. An analysis of 200 homemade dog food recipes revealed that 95 percent contained at least one essential nutrient deficiency, underscoring the difficulty of maintaining a balanced diet without professional guidance.

In addition to nutritional concerns, gastric torsion (stomach bloating) remains a critical, life-threatening emergency for dogs. This condition, where the stomach fills with gas and rotates, can lead to organ damage and circulatory failure. Large, deep-chested breeds such as Great Danes, German Shepherds, and Rottweilers are at higher risk. Symptoms include restlessness, bloating, and shallow breathing, requiring immediate veterinary intervention to prevent death.
