Canine intelligence study ranks Malinois as top breed

Recent studies and expert recommendations have highlighted various aspects of canine intelligence and trainability. A study involving 1,000 dogs across 13 breeds evaluated adaptive intelligence, social intelligence, and instinctive abilities, including memory, problem-solving, and impulse control.

The Malinois ranked highest in the intelligence tests, scoring 35 out of 39 points, surpassing the Border Collie, which traditionally held the reputation for being the most intelligent breed. The Hovawart and Spanish Water Dog followed in the rankings. While the Malinois excelled in memory and independence, Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers showed strong performance in social intelligence tasks.

Experts emphasize that while certain breeds like Golden Retrievers and Labradors are noted for being easy to train due to their desire to please and social nature, breed is not the only factor. Individual personality, early socialization, and consistent training are critical for a dog's ability to adapt to family life and public spaces.
