Cannabinoid research shows CBD can increase THC plasma availability

A meta-analysis published in Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reviews indicates that co-administering cannabidiol (CBD) with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) can significantly increase the plasma availability of THC and its active metabolite, 11-OH-THC. Researchers from the Université de Montréal analyzed 14 unique acute dosing trials, finding that this effect is highly dose-dependent for both compounds.

While the combination of CBD and THC has shown efficacy in treating conditions such as MS-related spasticity, researchers suggest that the increased levels of THC metabolites necessitate caution when recommending high doses of CBD in conjunction with THC.

Cannabinoids include various compounds such as THC, which is primarily responsible for intoxicating effects, and CBD, which is widely researched for non-intoxicating benefits. Other compounds like CBG, CBN, and THCV are increasingly present in hemp and marijuana products, though scientific evidence regarding their specific human effects varies significantly, with some having extensive research and others remaining largely preclinical.
