Cannabis consumption methods and new THC breath detection technology

Research indicates that cannabis consumption methods significantly influence the risk of cannabis use disorder (CUD). Inhalation methods, such as smoking, vaping, or dabbing, are associated with higher prevalence and severity of CUD due to rapid THC absorption and intense psychological reinforcement. Conversely, oral or mucosal products result in slower, prolonged effects that correlate with lower disorder prevalence. Multimodal users, those using various administration methods simultaneously, face higher risks.

In Canada, Alco Prévention Canada has introduced the Cannabix Marijuana Breath Test (MBT) to address workplace safety challenges. Unlike traditional urine tests that may detect consumption from weeks prior, the MBT is designed to detect THC in the breath within a window of approximately four hours following use. This technology aims to provide employers in critical sectors like construction and transport with a reliable tool to assess current impairment rather than past usage.
