Cannabis industry sees regulatory shifts and rising medical sales
The cannabis industry is experiencing significant regulatory and market shifts. In Florida, medical marijuana patients have purchased over 15 billion milligrams of THC and 5.17 million ounces of flower so far in 2026, with the patient count rising to 941,509.
In the United States, federal rescheduling of cannabis to a Schedule III substance is acting as a major regulatory catalyst. While this move may eventually improve research opportunities and alleviate tax burdens caused by Section 280E, investors are cautioned that tax relief is not immediate. Major companies such as Trulieve Cannabis Corp., Green Thumb Industries Inc., and Cresco Labs Inc. remain central to the sector.
Legal and scientific developments are also emerging. A federal judge in Ohio issued a preliminary injunction to block certain state hemp restrictions that may discriminate against interstate commerce. Meanwhile, a Swiss study involving 1,177 consumers suggests that regulated pharmacy access leads to lower-risk consumption methods without increasing overall usage frequency. Additionally, research indicates that moderate water restrictions during the flowering stage of marijuana plants can reduce water consumption without significantly impacting CBD yield or flower production.
