Cannabis Use Disorder rates rising in US adults

A new study published in JAMA Psychiatry indicates a rising prevalence of Cannabis Use Disorder (CUD) among adults in the United States. Analyzing data from over 180,000 adults between 2021 and 2024, researchers found that CUD increased from 7.3% to 9.3% among men and from 4.5% to 5.6% among women.

The study also noted an increase in moderate-to-severe cases, rising from 3.1% to 4.1% for men and from 1.7% to 2.5% for women. These trends were most pronounced in middle-aged and older adults.

Researchers suggest that increasing THC potency, greater availability, and declining perceptions of harm are key factors contributing to this rise. The findings highlight a need for public health efforts to focus on early detection, education, and evidence-based treatment rather than mere stigmatization.
