Canoas experiences surge in gang-related violence
A wave of violence has struck the city of Canoas, primarily concentrated in the Rio Branco and Niterói neighborhoods. Recent incidents include a shooting in Niterói where four people were wounded by gunmen in a red vehicle, following an attack in Rio Branco.
The Civil Police investigation suggests the violence stems from a conflict between criminal factions fighting for control over drug trafficking territories. According to the Homicide and Person Protection Police Station, a criminal organization from the southern zone of Porto Alegre has moved into the Niterói neighborhood and is attempting to seize drug distribution points in Rio Branco.
These areas have historically been controlled by a faction from Vale dos Sinos. Police sources indicate that some attacks in Rio Branco are being carried out by former members of the Vale dos Sinos faction who are seeking revenge after being expelled for alleged betrayal. Law enforcement has organized targeted operations to interrupt the cycle of violence.
