Canoas Municipal Chamber seeks to occupy current Court building
The Municipal Chamber of Canoas has formally requested that the City Hall grant them the use of the building currently occupied by the local Court (Fórum). The request follows the planned relocation of the Judiciary to a new facility, which will leave the current building vacant.
The Chamber's current headquarters is nearly 50 years old and was designed for 11 councilors; it now struggles to accommodate 21 parliamentarians, their staff, and various administrative sectors. The Mayor of Canoas expressed support for the move, noting the structural limitations of the existing legislative building.
Meanwhile, construction is underway for the new Canoas Court building, located in the Centro neighborhood. The project, funded by the Rio Grande do Sul State Court of Justice (TJRS) with an investment of R$ 59.5 million, is expected to be completed by the end of 2027. The new 11-story structure aims to reduce operational costs, improve accessibility, and provide modern security features, including independent access for defendants and staff.
