Canon and Epson photo printers compete on features as quality gaps narrow

The current market for high-end photo printers is characterized by a narrow gap between “very good and very good plus a little bit,” making feature sets and running costs more decisive than raw print quality alone.

In comparisons between professional models, the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1100 utilizes 12 ink slots, including a chroma optimizer and pigment inks, but is noted for its large size, weight, and ink consumption during maintenance. Conversely, the Epson EcoTank ET-8550 offers practical advantages such as a built-in scanner, portability, and a straight-through paper path capable of handling poster board and luster paper without marks.

While manufacturers like Canon claim improvements in color accuracy between successive models, independent testing suggests that differences in print quality are often negligible and difficult to distinguish even under varying light conditions.
