Canon announces Dual Pixel 3D Converter software for 3D model generation

Canon has announced the upcoming release of Dual Pixel 3D Converter, a Windows-based application scheduled for availability on October 8, 2026. The software allows users to transform standard photographs into high-quality 3D models without the need for specialized 3D capture equipment.

The technology leverages Canon’s proprietary Dual Pixel CMOS phase-detection autofocus technology. By utilizing the phase difference information captured by the sensor's photodiodes, the software's algorithms can calculate the three-dimensional shape of a subject. It then applies the high-resolution textures from the original EOS camera image to create a realistic model.

Key features include the ability to generate full scenes or isolate specific subjects, adjust depth intensity, and add simple dynamic effects for video previews. The resulting models can be imported into professional 3D editing software. The application will support Dual Pixel RAW (DPRAW) files from compatible EOS R system cameras and distance-information JPEG data from the upcoming EOS R8 Mark II.

Canon also plans to release a Dual Pixel 3D SDK within 2026 to provide enterprise-level solutions for industries such as e-commerce, advertising, and digital photography workflows.
