Canon demonstrates real-time 3D remote sports viewing technology
Canon conducted a world-first demonstration experiment to recreate sports competition spaces in real-time at remote locations. Using volumetric video technology and the MREAL mixed reality system, the company captured basketball games from the 20th Asian Games held in Nagoya, Aichi.
The experiment utilized NTT’s next-generation communication infrastructure, IOWN APN, to transmit high-capacity, low-latency 3D spatial data from the Aichi International Arena to Canon’s Kawasaki facility. This setup allowed for the remote placement of 3D data generation servers, optimizing equipment layout at the filming site.
Participants at a satellite venue in Toranomon, Tokyo, used MR devices to view the live matches as 3D spatial data. This allowed spectators to observe players' movements from various free viewpoints, sharing an immersive experience as if they were present at the arena. The technology aims to enhance remote viewing experiences and increase the utilization of regional sports facilities.
