Canon develops industry-first printer EDR security technology

Canon has developed and implemented industry-first printer EDR (Endpoint Detection and Response) technology to enhance the security of office multifunction devices and printers. This technology applies the principles of EDR, typically used for PCs and servers, to printing hardware to monitor, detect, and respond to suspicious activities.

Starting in the first quarter of 2027, Canon will expand this technology to its ‘imageFORCE’ series and other office devices via firmware updates. The system utilizes the MITRE ATT&CK framework and proprietary behavioral detection to identify unknown threats and internal misconduct. When a threat is detected, the technology can automatically take action, such as blocking suspicious communications or restoring tampered settings, while notifying administrators via email or log management systems.
