Canon EOS 550D camera successfully runs Doom via custom firmware

A developer has successfully ported the classic video game Doom to run on the Canon EOS 550D DSLR camera. Using the open-source Magic Lantern firmware framework, developer Bas Lichtjaar (known as lauris-nl) created a module that allows the camera to function similarly to a handheld gaming device.

The port enables users to play the original Doom or Doom II by loading IWAD files from an SD card. The gameplay is controlled via the camera’s physical hardware: the directional pad handles movement and aiming, the SET button is used for shooting and menu confirmation, the zoom buttons manage running and strafing, and the rear control wheel allows players to cycle through weapons.

While currently optimized for the EOS 550D, the Magic Lantern framework is compatible with various Canon models using DIGIC 4 through DIGIC 7 processors, suggesting potential for similar ports on other compatible devices. Users should note that Magic Lantern is an unofficial third-party firmware, and any issues arising from its use are the responsibility of the user.
