Canon users develop film emulation firmware for DSLR models
Developers are using AI-assisted “vibe coding” to create custom firmware that allows older Canon EOS full-frame DSLRs, such as the 5D and 6D, to run film emulations. This software allows users to simulate various classic film stocks, including Kodak Gold 200, Portra 400, and Fujifilm Superia 400, directly on the camera.
One implementation by Florin Kiritescu reportedly runs from an SD card as an add-on to the original firmware, meaning the camera reverts to its standard settings once the card is removed. While the results are promising, public versions of the software have not been widely released, likely due to concerns regarding manufacturer restrictions or potential hardware instability.
