Canonical accelerates Ubuntu kernel updates and adopts Rust-based PGP
Canonical is implementing several technical changes to the Ubuntu operating system to improve security and performance. To address the increasing frequency of security vulnerabilities in Linux code, the company is accelerating its kernel update process. By utilizing new two-week SRU (Stable Release Update) cycles that overlap, Ubuntu will be able to release kernel updates every seven days.
Additionally, Ubuntu is continuing its transition toward software written in the Rust programming language to reduce memory-related vulnerabilities. In the upcoming Ubuntu 26.10 release, Sequoia PGP—a modern OpenPGP implementation written in Rust—will be added to the repositories. While GnuPG remains available, Sequoia PGP is being positioned as a potential future default for handling OpenPGP certificates, signatures, and messages.
