Canonical launches optional virtualization HWE stack for Ubuntu 26.04 LTS

Canonical has introduced an optional virtualization Hardware Enablement (HWE) stack for Ubuntu 26.04 LTS. The stack adds newer versions of QEMU, libvirt, the EDK2 firmware framework and SeaBIOS while the rest of the system remains on the stable LTS base. Updates are provided every six months for the first two years of the release, pulling packages from Ubuntu interim releases after testing.

The new components support confidential computing features such as AMD SEV‑SNP and Intel TDX, aimed at organizations that need stronger isolation for regulated workloads, AI inference, private‑cloud and sovereign‑cloud environments. Administrators can enable the stack with the ubuntu_virt_helpertool, ensuring consistent versioning across the virtualization stack.
