Cantabria authorities investigate death of 39 birds in Suances

The Government of Cantabria is monitoring the death of 39 birds in the Ría de San Martín, located in Suances. The deceased animals include 24 mallards, 13 laughing gulls, and two white-fronted geese, as well as some swans.

Authorities have activated protocols to collect the specimens and minimize risks to local wildlife and ecological balance. While laboratory analysis is ongoing to determine the exact cause of death, avian influenza has been ruled out so far. As a preventive measure, the affected area has been fenced off to prevent other animals from coming into contact with the carcasses.
