Cantabria Health Service to indemnify family after medical negligence
The Cantabrian Health Service (SCS) has admitted liability and agreed to pay 219,723 euros to the family of a 24-year-old woman who died due to medical negligence. The victim passed away in August 2025 at the Marqués de Valdecilla Hospital following a cerebral venous thrombosis that went undiagnosed.
According to administrative resolutions, the young woman sought medical attention repeatedly over a ten-day period starting July 20, 2025, reporting intense headaches and persistent vomiting. Despite her worsening condition, she was treated only with symptomatic relief and repeatedly discharged from the Suances health center and the Sierrallana Hospital in Torrelavega.
On July 29, emergency services requested an urgent cranial CT scan, but the procedure was never performed, and the patient was sent home again. She was discovered shortly after in a disoriented state with a massive cerebral thrombosis. The SCS acknowledged that the care provided did not adhere to professional medical standards, or 'lex artis', and has fully accepted the family's claim.
