Cantabria's Transport Overhaul Boosts Santander Port and Regional Economy

Cantabria is undergoing its most extensive infrastructure transformation in recent history, targeting four key transport vectors: maritime, high‑speed rail, commuter rail and road logistics. The Port of Santander has shifted from a bulk‑goods hub to a high‑value container node, handling 7.15 million tonnes of cargo and expanding its container terminal under the management of Boluda MT. In just two years, annual container movements rose from about 53 000 TEUs to nearly 150 000 TEUs, driving specialized employment and higher regional revenues.

These logistics upgrades are linked to multimillion‑euro projects such as the extension of the AVE high‑speed line to Santander via Palencia, the integration of Santander stations into the Cercanías network, and improvements to road freight corridors. Together, transport and logistics account for roughly 14 % of Cantabria’s GDP and over 11 % of its employment, making the sector a critical barometer of the region’s economic health.
