Cantareira System enters attention phase after September rains
The Cantareira System, the largest water reservoir in São Paulo, has moved into the 'attention' phase after record rainfall in September. The system ended the month with 41.1% of its useful volume stored, an improvement from the 32.99% recorded at the end of August, which had placed it in the 'alert' phase.
Following this change in status, the National Water and Sanitation Agency (ANA) and SP Águas have authorized Sabesp, the system's administrator, to increase water withdrawal to 31 cubic meters per second (m³/s). This is an increase from the 27 m³/s limit permitted during the alert phase, though it remains below the 33 m³/s allowed under normal conditions.
The operational levels are governed by Joint Resolution No. 925/2017, established following the water crisis of 2014 and 2015. The resolution defines five operational tiers based on monthly storage levels: normal (≥60%), attention (40%–60%), alert (30%–40%), restriction (20%–30%), and special (<20%).
The Cantareira System consists of five interconnected reservoirs—Jaguari, Jacareí, Cachoeira, Atibainha, and Paiva Castro—and supplies approximately half of the population in the São Paulo metropolitan area, as well as parts of Campinas.
