Cantareira System reaches 51.2% capacity after heavy rainfall

The Cantareira System, which supplies part of the Greater São Paulo region, reached 51.2% of its capacity on Saturday, October 31. This marks the first time the reservoir has exceeded the 50% threshold since June 2025.

The recovery follows significant rainfall in September and October. In October, accumulated rainfall reached 210.8 mm, representing 162% of the historical average of 130 mm. September saw even higher levels, with 282.5 mm of rain, or 358.3% of its climatological average.

Despite the increase, the system remains in the attention phase for November, as defined by the National Water and Sanitation Agency (ANA) and SP Águas. This phase applies to levels between 40% and 60%. Under these conditions, Sabesp is limited to a water withdrawal rate of 31 cubic meters per second, compared to a normal rate of 33 cubic meters per second.

The Integrated Metropolitan System (SIM), which includes seven reservoirs, is currently operating at 61.9% capacity. To prevent shortages, the São Paulo state government has implemented preventive measures since August, including nighttime network pressure management, which reportedly saved 209 billion liters of water.
