Canton of Luzern imposes canton-wide fire ban amid extreme drought

The Canton of Luzern has introduced an absolute outdoor fire ban covering the entire cantonal area because of an ongoing severe drought, high temperatures, wind and a critically low water supply for firefighting. The ban forbids lighting any fire in open spaces, using charcoal or disposable grills, fireworks, sky lanterns, and discarding cigarettes or matches. Gas‑ and electric‑powered grills are exempt. Violations are subject to police action and offenders may be held liable for fire‑fighting and restoration costs.

Authorities, including the Luzern fire inspection and environmental police, have raised the forest‑fire danger level to its maximum and are urging residents to conserve drinking water and handle flammable materials with extreme caution. The situation is being continuously reassessed, with no relief expected in the near term.
