CANU warns event organizers and patrons of drug and spiking risks
The Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) has issued a warning to event promoters and patrons regarding the rise of illicit drug use, excessive alcohol consumption, and drink spiking at social gatherings.
CANU head James Singh emphasized that event organizers have a duty to ensure safety by maintaining visible security, prepared staff, accessible medical support, and encouraging safe transportation. Singh stated that “safety is not optional” and that organizers must create environments where drug activity is not tolerated and suspicious behavior is addressed.
Patrons are advised to remain vigilant by refusing substances such as pills, powders, vapes, or candy from strangers and by never leaving drinks unattended. The agency warned that these substances can lead to overdose, unconsciousness, permanent injury, sexual vulnerability, violence, and death.
