Canutillo ISD school board candidates face November election

Nine candidates are competing for four at-large seats on the Canutillo Independent School District Board of Trustees in the upcoming November 3 election. The contest includes three full-term seats and one unexpired term.

Candidates include incumbents Cindy Andrade and Breanne Barnes, former Superintendent Pedro Galaviz, and current board President Sergio Martinez. Other contenders include former Trustee Blanca Trout, technical analyst Ryan Escamilla, Guadalupe Montañez—a principal currently appealing her termination—and retired employee Patsy Mendoza.

The elected trustees will oversee a $387 million bond for construction projects approved in 2024 and work to improve the district’s academic performance following two consecutive years of a ‘C’ rating from the state accountability system. The board is responsible for setting tax rates, adopting budgets, and hiring or firing the superintendent.
