Canva to cut 1,271 jobs amid first growth slowdown in a decade

Australian design software company Canva has announced it will lay off 1,271 employees, representing approximately 22 percent of its global workforce. Co-founder and CEO Melanie Perkins described the decision as the most difficult in the company’s 13-year history, noting that the firm is experiencing its first growth slowdown in a decade.

The restructuring aims to prepare the company for the next decade by merging Product, Growth, and Platform teams into a single Product organization to reduce communication friction and increase autonomy. The company is also shifting toward a hybrid work model, requiring employees to be in the office two to three days a week, and centralizing more product teams in Sydney.

Several factors contributed to the decision, including rising operating costs associated with developing proprietary artificial intelligence models and increased competition from AI-driven design tools. Consequently, Canva has lowered its revenue growth forecast for 2026 from 30 percent to 20 percent.

To support departing staff, Canva is offering a severance package that includes at least six months of salary, continued healthcare coverage for up to 12 months in certain regions, career coaching, and one year of LinkedIn Premium. Some employees are also being offered $10,000 grants for future endeavors and may be permitted to keep their company MacBooks.
