Cap-Haïtien sees economic shift amid Port-au-Prince security crisis
Cap-Haïtien, Haiti’s oldest city, is emerging as a primary entry point for the country due to the ongoing security crisis in Port-au-Prince, which has suspended many air links to the capital.
While the instability in the capital has paralyzed many activities, it has triggered a redistribution of economic transactions. Large Haitian companies and humanitarian organizations are increasingly positioning themselves in Cap-Haïtien. Some diplomatic missions are also planning to establish annexes in the city.
Recent infrastructure developments include the renovation of road sections leading to the international airport and work to expand the diplomatic lounge. However, the city faces challenges from an exponential population increase driven by a massive influx of internally displaced persons fleeing the metropolitan region of Port-au-Prince.
