Capaccio Paestum administration collapses after mayor's resignation

The administration of Gaetano Paolino in Capaccio Paestum has ended prematurely after 15 months. The collapse of the local government followed the simultaneous resignations of nine municipal councilors, leading to the appointment of a prefectural commissioner, Gradone, to manage the municipality.

Paolino issued a statement defending his decision to step down, asserting that he refused to yield to what he described as “inappropriate and unacceptable” pressures from a municipal councilor. He stated, “There is a dignity and this has no price,” explaining that he preferred to leave office rather than submit to demands he deemed incompatible with his institutional role.

During his brief tenure, Paolino focused on financial restructuring, as the municipality had been in a state of pre-distress since 2024. His administration worked on budget rebalancing, rationalizing spending, and restarting stalled public works projects. The municipality was also under monitoring to prevent dissolution under Article 143 of the Consolidated Law on Local Authorities (TUEL).
