Capanema honey receives Geographical Indication status in Brazil
Capanema honey, produced in southwestern Paraná, has officially received Geographical Indication (GI) registration as a Denomination of Origin from the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI). This recognition validates that the honey's unique characteristics, such as its mild flavor and light color, are directly linked to the local environment, specifically the interaction between bees and the native flora of the Atlantic Forest near Iguaçu National Park.
The certification process was driven by a partnership between the Capanema City Hall and Sebrae Paraná, which began in 2018 to professionalize local apiculture. The formal application was submitted in March 2025 by the Association of Beekeepers of Capanema and Region (Apic), which currently represents 25 producers generating over 60 tons of honey annually. This industry supports more than 130 workers in the municipality.
With this new registration, Paraná becomes the Brazilian state with the highest number of recognized Geographical Indications, reaching a total of 29. This milestone is expected to strengthen local family farming by protecting product provenance and opening new commercial channels in national and international markets.
