Capcom announces REX Project to integrate AI into RE Engine
Capcom has announced the REX Project, an initiative to evolve its proprietary RE Engine into an AI-integrated development framework. Unveiled by programmer Satoshi Ishida at the Capcom Open Conference RE: 2026, the project aims to modernize workflows to address the increasing complexity, data sizes, and long production cycles of modern AAA games.
Rather than using generative AI to create final art assets or models, Capcom intends to use artificial intelligence as an internal tool to assist developers. The focus is on automating repetitive technical tasks, such as bug tracking, automated testing, code refactoring, and performance profiling. This approach is designed to help the company’s 2,000-plus developers manage massive amounts of data and streamline communication across diverse international teams.
The REX initiative includes several specialized sub-programs:
• RE:Dox: Standardizes data processing to increase speed. • RE:UI: Optimizes development tool interfaces to be lighter and more responsive. • RE:Log: Centralizes error logging and internal communications. • RE:Flows: A visual tool that converts gameplay behavior into code. • RE:Runtime: Improves the management of large numbers of characters and objects on screen.
Capcom stated that the RE Engine will remain the core technology, with REX providing modular, incremental upgrades rather than a complete replacement.
