Capcom uses Resident Evil remakes to fund new titles, achieving record sales

Capcom has made remakes a core part of its portfolio, saying they generate the revenue needed to develop brand‑new games such as the recently released original IP Pragmata. Producer Masachika Kawata explained that revisiting classic Resident Evil entries lets the company release a main‑series title each year and that the remakes are as important as the original releases.

The Resident Evil 4 remake has become the most successful remake of the current console generation, with Alinea Analytics reporting 16.8 million units sold and about $560 million in gross revenue, outpacing other popular remakes. This commercial success underpins Capcom’s strategy of focusing on remakes over spin‑offs; titles such as Resident Evil Revelations and Chronicles are not slated for the near term. An expansion for Resident Evil Requiem is expected only in late 2027, and the next spin‑off, Resident Evil Veronica, is scheduled for release in 2027.
