Capcom releases Onimusha: Way of the Sword

Capcom has released Onimusha: Way of the Sword, the first new entry in the historic franchise in twenty years. The game serves as a standalone title within the Onimusha universe and features the legendary Japanese swordsman Miyamoto Musashi as the protagonist. Set in and around Kyoto, the story follows Musashi as he battles undead creatures known as Genma after being resurrected with a magical gauntlet.

Reviewers note that while the game features a strong narrative and character development, the combat is demanding. It requires players to master specific mechanics rather than relying on simple hack-and-slash tactics. Although director Satoru Nihei clarified that the game is not a soulslike or an open-world title, players have noted similarities to the genre due to its high difficulty, precise combat, and emphasis on challenging boss encounters.

Producer Akihito Kadowaki addressed earlier concerns regarding the difficulty of the game's demo, noting that the final version offers various challenge levels, including Normal, New Game+, and a Massacre difficulty, to accommodate different player skill sets.
