Capcom reveals Resident Evil Requiem began as multiplayer game
Capcom producer Masachika Kawata has confirmed that Resident Evil Requiem was originally developed as an online multiplayer game before the team pivoted back to a single-player horror experience. The revelation was made in the Biohazard 30th Special magazine, where Kawata explained that director Koshi Nakanishi led the project toward an online direction, but research and testing results were unfavorable.
This shift in development explains certain design elements in the final product, such as the large, sandbox-like nature of the Raccoon City sections. The decision to prioritize the core horror concept helped the game achieve commercial success, selling over 6 million copies globally following its release in February 2026. The final version of the game focuses on a blend of intense horror and action through two distinct characters.
